australian camel adventure

been reading this may 1978 issue during my breaks, half an hour everyday this week I'd sit in my hot car in a quiet Huntington Park neighborhood and escape with this lady and her band of Australian camels as they walked over 1000 miles across the amazing spooky desert and then finally swim in the Indian Ocean. camels look like horse/giraffe/llama hybrids. It was sad when she had to shoot her black dog Diggity after he ate dingo bait. Look at these pretty book covers:

People never think of there being camels in Australia, do they? My father has been collecting National Geographic since the early 60s, so I will hunt around for this copy - looks interesting!
